Happy birthday Morgane!

Today is my friend Morgane's birthday. I sent her a cute and colourful little package in the mail.
All contents are from Dille & Kamille; it's such a lovely shop!

USA 2013 | Fidalgo and Whidbey islands

After the Boeing factory we kept on heading North and went to Fidalgo island where we drove all the way to the top of Mount Erie and enjoyed the magnificent views of the surrounding islands in the early evening light. We then went on to cross the big bridge to Whidbey island, where we spent the night. Such a beautiful area!

Driving South, part 3

After hours of driving along beautiful and mostly deserted roads through hectares and hectares of forest we eventually made it to the Wilderness Discovery Center in the Valley of the Giants, near Denmark (yep, Denmark the city, not the country). I had wished to go there ever since I read Bill Bryson's Down Under book years and years ago and I was so glad to finally go!

The highlight of the center is the amazing tree top walk they have installed amongst several of the very high trees. This very impressive platform allows you to walk comfortably at the very top of the trees (it's so much less scary than the look-out trees we had climbed previously!). It feels really wonderful to imagine what birds see and experience living up there, and the views were of course rather breathtaking. The rest of the center, with many very impressive giant trees and really good explanation displays, was really good too... I was so impressed to find such an interesting and cleverly put-together place so remote from everything else!

Driving South, part 2

In the 1930s and 40s several trees in the area we visited were turned into observation towers to look out for fires. Great spikes were hammered straight into the tree trunks to make ladders and enabled the people on watch to climb all the way up to the top of the canopy, at 60 to 75 meters off the ground. Some of these trees are still there today, and courageous (and slightly crazy) tourists can still climb them to admire the view. A few of us were brave enough to give it a go (most of us climbed the Gloucester tree and the Bicentennial one but I stopped at the first platform, a little above the half way mark; I was a little too shaky to go all the way up!).

This is the view from the half-way platform. Left, looking up. Right, looking down.

We saw many, many more trees during our short ride on the Pemberton tramway which took us through very pretty forest areas.

Why should love be pink?

I have seen so many Valentine's day decorations in a multitude of pinks, reds and purples that I was getting close to reaching a complete overdose. As a remedy, here is a good measure of fresh minty greens inspired by the beautiful typography (pictured in the middle) my friend Claire posted today.
