I was extremely tempted to turn the heater on tonight.. it's been rainy and cold all day, and I just was tired of this ugly damp feeling that's everywhere. But it's June. Almost July! There's no way I'm going to turn the heater on in June!! So I lit up some candles. I guess they do produce a little heat -not enough to make the thermometer in the living room go up any degrees though- but psychologically it makes all the difference. And with this CD I bought today (discovered here), it turned out to be a lovely evening after all.
Often I wish that iPhoto had an option to sort your photos by colour like google does... (see here and here for examples).
I am such a sucker for nice colour arrangements... And whether it's nature or nurture, I know I get this from my mum... look at this pinterest gallery of hers. She's the best at it!
I'm not sure charcoal actually counts as a colour, especially after seeing all the beautiful hues in the links above, but that's what I could come up with tonight with one glance at the photos I had in front of me in my iPhoto...
Oh, and just in case you were wondering, here is what is playing in our living room at the moment.
I have a few of her songs on the playlist I've made to go running and have heard them a lot lately. My brain must have made some connections between the Belinda Carlisle receptors and the running ones because my legs are feeling quite restless right now!
1. I ate our first balcony-grown strawberries of the year.
2. I made Sarah's orange cake again. It's still in the oven.
3. I'm super proud of my mum, who has been teaching and exhibiting all over Europe recently.
4. I started this list yesterday but got distracted, so I'm finishing it today.
5. I spend way too much time helping my smurfs get a better village on the iPad.
6. I love warm, sunny weather like we've had today.
7. I've been (thanks to Mart) listening to a whole lot of 'mash-ups' (for cool examples, see here and here).
8. I like sweets better than savoury stuff.
9. I should start reading a new book.
10. For the long weekend ahead, I wish we could go back to the second house from the left on the photo below...

Ok, I have to admit it: we used to find the Danish language pretty hilarious. We had of course heard it before going there, when our friends Iben and Flemming lived in Maastricht, but we had never been as exposed as when we were in Denmark for our holidays.
When we first drove into the country and switched the radio to a Danish station, we had huge smiles as we were listening to the constant babbling without understanding a single word of what was said. But after 10 days in the country, we learned a few words and started recognising some of the things that were said. We got pretty good at numbers (not necessarily knowing what number was being mentioned - especially if it was anything above twenty - but nonetheless recognising that there was a number in the sentence). And since a debit-card machine in a shop in Copenhagen told me to 'husk' (remember) my card, we have been hearing this word again and again!
To keep listening to beautiful Danish, we've been getting back to a TV show we had started years ago: Unit One. Or, in Danish: Rejseholdet (which means something like special traveling unit). It's a police drama set all across Denmark which follows a special detective unit who travels to different places to investigate dreadful cases. We are watching it with English subtitles and we love to listen to all the funny sounds they make, while recognising bit and bobs here and there.
Now: another thing about Danish is the pronunciation. We quickly found out that, especially for cities and places, the pronunciation doesn't resemble (at all) the way you would pronounce the words in 'English'. For example, Skagen, at the Northern tip of the country is pronounced 'skain'. Esbjerg, on the west coast? Well, that's 'espia'. Of course! ;-)
Well, here is a little sample of Danish for those of you who would like to hear what it sounds like, and how the pronunciation differs from what is actually written. It's one of the songs we heard over and over on the radio - Gosh it brings back good memories!
I have tons of photos of Switzerland to show you, but Mum is now here in Maastricht with us for a few days, and so I don't want to spend too much time at the computer just yet. You will see them soon though, don't worry!

I made an apple-coloured garland today, for a special little girl who is going to turn three tomorrow!

We drove almost exactly 2000 kilometers during our honeymoon, yet we hardly ever turned. :-)
Here is a little peek at some of the garlands I made this weekend as well as of the yummy muffins that I baked today for our date with the lovely Teresa and Matilda. I was a bit anxious as I had never tried the recipe before (and some of the ingredients sounded funny; oil? I usually use butter when I bake), but they were perfect!
